I love gardening best at this time of the year. There’s less growing that I hate disturbing. It’s not too hot. I like to be warm, sure, but not overheated. There’s just something about autumn that I love so look forward to seeing some more progress soon!
September is here, and already the evenings are drawing in more than they were. Our spring purchased chickens are moulting and we are awash in potatoes. Must be autumn!
It is over. I have made it. I leave the summer holidays of 2019 older, with slightly more white hair, tired, and yet rather satisfied.
Last week was the last of the school holiday upheavals. I’ve got some time off work this week to relax and recuperate (aka, paint my patio and do more gardening!). But from now on it’s just back to regular full time working and running a household. So today’s blog is going to be a quick tour of the three key highlights of the summer, a Grow, a Make and a Mend. Just one of each?! I know!
I made jam.
Took a weekend off for good behaviour. Oh, and harvesting/blanching/freezing another 3.2kg of french beans. Going to be a green bean kind of winter menu this year! Meant to do this post on Monday – got distracted by making some peach and plum jam. Meant to do this post last night – Tuesday – got distracted by spending several hours caring for an exhausted egg bound hen.
But here! Now! My promised blog.
I made jam.
Some high wind warnings where we are this week, but no damage. Bit blustery but nothing for us that caused a problem. To be honest, each winter storm we weather shows us the weak points to fix – usually the old fence panels! But we are down to just two of the old ones left – and we actually have the replacements in the alley waiting to go in anyway.
The school holidays move on. The play equipment has hosted many of Robin’s friends this week. It’s good to see such a multi-purpose space working out for our household. We pitch tents in it, let children play in, free range our chickens in it, relax in it, grow food in it. Smashing.
Two weeks missed on updates because of absence but I can assure you the garden kept on growing while this blog waited patiently!
We’re all back from holiday now. Still in the slightly unusual pattern of summer holidays with Robin off school, but our main absence for the year has been achieved. While we were in the sun in Dorset our housesitters firstly baked in a heatwave and then suffered a whole week of torrential rain. The rain was good for the garden.
Welcome to this week’s update review. Well, it’s last week’s update review technically. Yesterday got so hectic that several things were rescheduled. I thought about writing these ahead of time but actually I don’t want to do that. I want these blog updates to remain ‘live’.
Let’s get on with the week in review then. Continue reading “Week in review: 24 ”
Week in review
Welcome to the first of the new format catch up blog posts: week in review. The number, by the way, is the ISO week number for the week that has just happened. That’s from Monday 27 May to today, Sunday 2 June. Continue reading “Week in review: 22 ”
Hello, 2019. Yes, we’re still here!
Blog entries on this site dried up by mid 2018. I’d forgive you if you thought we had gone away. Much like our garden in the summer heatwave! Those of you who were watching the Instagram feed page will have noticed that Instagram was really working for us, whereas this blog got a bit overwhelming.
So what’s going to happen in the year ahead? Key Instagram posts are going to appear here on the blog too. Thank you to If This Than That for some nifty automation. I’ll be popping back here every few weeks at the most to add some original content. Getting some priorities right for the year ahead!
In the meantime, keep reading to find out more about what happened in our garden throughout last year. Continue reading “2019 Grow, Make, Mend”
Robin made a special request for a fox cake recently.
Well, if nothing else I like a challenge! Continue reading “make: Fox cake!”
